The Japan Water Forum is inviting applications for the Kyoto World Water Grand Prize 2024 to honor a distinguished organization involved in grass-roots activities related to solving water problems in developing countries.
It also aims to improve the quality of grass-roots activities and make the importance of such activities known throughout the world.
Objectives
- Water-related issues are related not only to the Goal 6 (Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all) of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) but also the other SDGs of the 2030 Agenda adopted at the UN General Assembly in 2015.
- The COVID-19 pandemic of 2020 has made them aware of the importance of safe and sustainable water and sanitation as well as the necessity of building a resilient society.
- They became aware of Kyoto’s resilience and its long history of development, where people pursued creativity through cultural exchange and at the same time valued harmony between tradition and innovation. They came to the conclusion that activities harmonized with unique social and cultural dimensions in the project area, would ultimately lead to sustainable development.
Prize Details
- The winner of the prize will receive 2,000,000 JPY (Approximately 14,000 USD (currently), depending on fluctuating exchange rates).
Eligibility Criteria
- Any non-profit organization based in a developing country, which is involved in grass-roots activities aimed at solving water problems through measures consistent with local cultures.
- Note: Countries and territories classified as Least Developed Countries (LDCs), Low Income Countries (LICs), Lower Middle Income Countries (LMICs), and Upper Middle Income Countries (UMICs) from among the OECD’s DAC.
- The following organizations are excluded:
- National governments, local governments, commercial organizations (private companies), funding institutions, international aid organizations.
Awarding Ceremony
- The prize will be awarded at the opening or closing ceremony at the 10th World Water Forum, to be held in Indonesia in May, 2024.
- One representative of the winning organization will be invited to make an acceptance speech at the awarding ceremony.
