Grant Opportunities: Call for Participation: UTA-Do African Cities Workshop 2023

Deadline: 27-Jan-23

The Urban Theory Africa – Doing (UTA-Do) 2023 organizing team is proud to announce the call for prospective participants interested in attending the annual UTA-Do Workshop.

Workshop Details
  • The Workshop responds to the dire need to co-produce knowledge from urban Africa, challenging the asymmetries which exist in urban theory and policy spaces.
  • The UTA-Do African Cities Workshop builds on the brash, daring, dynamic ‘uta-do?’ mentality of Nairobi. Loosely translated as ‘what are you going to do about it?’ (rendered with a mischievous smirk), the UTA-Do workshop creates a space and network through which scholars and fellow urbanists theorize and think together.
  • The one-week program is structured around theoretical inputs, writing exercises, field trips, and arts immersion activities. UTA-Do, while centered on urban theory making, is designed to connect academics with those who are doing – including artists and activists.
Eligibility Criteria
  • While the Workshop targets Nairobi based urbanists (for practical reasons), the orientation and conceptualization is Pan-African, and the Workshop hopes to attract thinkers and doers from various cities and regions.
  • Between 25 and 30 participants will be selected to take part in the 2023 program.
  • Early career academics, researchers, activists, and artists interested in urban theory.
  • Where: British Institute in Eastern Africa (BIEA), Nairobi
