Canon is pleased to announce the call for applications for the Canon Student Development Programme 2023 that offers students across Europe, Middle East and Africa an incredible opportunity to meet leading experts, attend key industry events and have their portfolios professionally assessed.

Modules

The Programme will comprise three separate modules

  • Module 1: Virtual Portfolio Preparation Mentorships
    • 100 admitted Participants will be partnered with a professional mentor between 29th May – 30th June to support and refine their portfolio. Each Participant will be granted up to three one hour sessions. All sessions will be conducted virtually.
  • Module 2: Workshop
    • Following the concusion of module 1, up to 30 Participants will be selected in July to attend a 5 day workshop taking place between 2nd – 6th September 2023 in Girona (S) and Perpignan (F). During the workshop Participants will attend dedicated lectures, take part in group portfolio reviews, practical sessions, attend the Visa pour l’image Festival (“Festival”) and benefit from networking opportunities with representatives from the Imaging and Media industry.
  • Module 3: Hamburg Portfolio Review
    • 5 Participants will be selected in September and receive a 3 day trip to Hamburg (G) and granted a place at the Hamburg Portfolio Review taking place between 15th – 17th September 2023. During the event Participants will take part in portfolio reviews, and attend additional meetings with industry professionals. Following the event the 5 Participants will receive a €2k grant and up to €9k worth of Canon product(s).
    • All Participants will be introduced to the relevant local country Canon organisation.
  • Selected participants for modules 2 and 3 will be hosted by the Organiser. Organiser will provide return economy class travel tickets by air and/bus or train (when feasible), full board accommodation, meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) and travel insurance (excluding theft or loss of valuables) for the duration of the stay as indicated in clause 9.
  • For the avoidance of doubt, Organiser will not be responsible for organising any visas for any elements of the Prize, this is the sole responsibility of the Participant.
  • The hospitality is intended for the participant only, the Organiser will not cover any other expenses than those above indicated.
  • Participants must ensure they will be available during the aforementioned dates May 29th – September 17th 2023 if selected for any of the above modules. Canon cannot amend or change these dates.
  • Canon may, at its discretion, include some participants from the previous year into this year’s module 2 intake of 30. This is only where they were unable to participate in module 2 last year due to extenuating circumstances.
Funding Information
  • The final 5 will also receive up to €9K worth of Canon kit & a €2K grant, helping them take the next step to turning pro.
Eligibility Criteria
  • All entrants (“Entrants”) must:
    • Be aged 18 and over at the date April 16th, 2023;
    • Have started or completed an education programme in the countries listed below during the academic year 2022-2023, or
    • Be engaged in internships by agencies or magazines within the same period;
    • Be nominated/endorsed by professionals from the photographic industry
    • Canon reserves the right to verify Entrants eligibility and admission by requesting a copy of your ID and either proof of your enrolment on a qualifying course/internship/agency, or for those entering under nomination by photographic industry professionals, a letter of recomendation from the endorsing professional.
    • Participants who attended Module 2 or 3 of the 2022 Canon Student Development Programme are not eligible to enter and/or participate.
    • Employees of the Organiser, its subsidiary companies, their families, agents and other parties directly involved with this Programme and the sponsorship are not eligible to enter.
Selection Process
  • After the Entry Period, an independent panel composed of Canon employees and external industry professionals will select 100 submissions for admission to the Canon Student Development Programme (“Programme”). Submissions will be assessed on narrative skill, authenticity, storyline, bio and overall quality of the portfolio.
  • Eligible participants with the qualifying submissions will be selected and notified on the outcome of the review by May 5th 2023.
  • Those selected will become “Participants” and will be admitted to the Programme. The Programme will comprise three separate modules, with a proportion of the Participants selected for subsequent stages by an independent panel as detailed herein under section 9 “Prize”.
