Deadline: 29-Jul-22
Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) invites researchers, thought leaders, and professionals to participate in a 3-day scoping workshop around the general themes of climate science, sustainability, and clean energy.
The scoping workshop will be focused, collaborative, and creative. Its aim is to stimulate thinking in promising new research approaches and theories at the intersection of climate science, sustainability, and clean energy. Participants in the SIAM Convening on Climate Science, Sustainability, and Clean Energy will be expected to engage constructively in dialogue with each other, the professional facilitators, and the subject guides to articulate research needs relating to climate science, sustainability, and clean energy. Scoping workshops are designed to jumpstart grand challenges, collect input from large and diverse communities, and explore potential areas of research.
The SIAM Convening on Climate Science, Sustainability, and Clean Energy will be held in-person and will take place October 10 – 12, 2022 in Tysons, Virginia, U.S.
The workshop will be facilitated by Knowinnovation (KI), an international organization that specializes in driving advances in innovation and achieving excellence in research.
Benefits
Participants will receive reimbursement for travel to and from the workshop venue; meals and accommodation will be included as part of the workshop.
Goals and Outcomes
The goal of the work is to give recommendations to federal research and development agencies towards support of research and education in order to advance scientific knowledge, anticipate future conditions, accelerate clean energy innovations and sustainable practices, and increase resilience in the face of climate change. Multidisciplinary collaboration is necessary to conquer the challenges that are posed, and core to the work will be increased partnerships between academia, industry, non-profits, and government to guarantee innovation and translation of knowledge into action, and the education of a diverse and competitive workforce.
The deliverables from the convening will be a synthesis report representing the major challenges, themes, and suggestions; whitepapers that will go deeper into the specific areas and challenges; and presentations which will be publicly available on a SIAM webpage.
Eligibility Criteria
- researchers and professionals from the range of disciplines and fields that contribute to and are involved in clean energy, sustainability, and climate science research are encouraged to apply.
- And also encourage applicants from the private and public sectors who would include those who consider themselves aligned with one or more of the following NSF directorates: Biological Sciences, Computer and Information Science and Engineering, Education and Human Resources, Engineering, Geosciences, Mathematical and Physical Sciences, and Social Behavioral and Economic Sciences. To ensure that a broad and diverse range of perspectives is gathered, researchers and professionals at various career stages are encouraged to apply.
- Applicants must commit to participating in-person for the entire duration of the workshop if selected as a meeting participant. There will also be some required pre-work and light background reading/viewing.
