Crowd4SDG is a Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Action supported by the European Commission’s Science with and for Society (SwafS) programme. Through an innovation cycle called GEAR (GATHER, EVALUATE, ACCELERATE, REFINE), the transdisciplinary Crowd4SDG consortium of six partners will promote the development of citizen science projects aimed at tackling the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),  with a focus on climate action.

Details
  • Pitch your idea, prototype, or project on how to address climate justice, and you may be one of the 50 people selected for online coaching by their team. They will help you develop your idea into an impactful project, and build a strong team around it. Participants who complete this phase will receive a certificate of completion from the UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR).
  • The most promising teams and projects will progress to an intensive online workshop that includes pitching and prototyping sessions co-organized by CERN IdeaSquare and the Crowd4SDG partners, to develop a functional prototype using Crowd4SDG tools. The teams that complete this phase will receive a further certificate for their prototype development .
  • Representatives of two of the most promising teams will be invited by Crowd4SDG to travel to Geneva, Switzerland, to present their projects in person to potential UN and NGO partner organizations and impact investors during an international conference called the Geneva Trialogue.
Examples of Challenges
  • Experts from agencies of the UN, as well as National Statistical Offices, have helped the Crowd4SDG partners to define specific challenges that address the issues of climate and justice they are particularly keen to monitor. ​​They focused primarily on those disproportionately affected but whose perspectives may not be sufficiently included, such as women, youth, persons with disability, indigenous populations, and other groups that need to be identified in each national context.
  • They are looking for ideas that could help to measure or propose ways to improve:
    • The participation of vulnerable groups in the discussion and climate decision-making
    • Public services and government responsiveness for climate resilience
    • Measuring access to environmental justice
    • Measuring access to environmental information and countering mis/disinformation
    • Climate change impacts, conflict, displacement, and insecurity
Funding Information

Selected teams will receive up to 5000 CHF to prepare their projects for deployment.

Eligibility Criteria

The challenge is open to any individual anywhere in the world. Applicants must be 16 or older. Applications must be in English, and participants should have a good command of written and spoken English.

Selection Criteria

The selection criteria for your idea are Novelty, Relevance, Feasibility, and appropriate use of Crowdsourcing:

  • Novelty – your pitch should be about your idea. Describe a specific challenge you want to solve in your community rather than general problems.
  • Relevance – your idea should deal with Climate Justice, helping the most vulnerable to climate change build resilience in their communities.
  • Feasibility – Be ambitious but realistic: your idea should be something that you could achieve with some help from a few like-minded people.
  • Crowdsourcing – Explain how you will inspire larger numbers of people to get involved in helping you achieve your idea by either gathering data or taking collective action.

The Pulitzer Center will fund international travel costs associated with reporting projects on tropical rainforests, with an emphasis on issues that have gone unreported or under-reported in the mainstream American media.

Funding Information

The amount of individual travel grants will depend on the specific project and detailed budget planning. Most awards fall in the range of $5,000 to $15,000 but depending on project specifics may be higher.

Eligibility Criteria
  • Grants are open to all journalists, writers, photographers, radio producers or filmmakers; staff journalists as well as freelancers of any nationality are eligible to apply.
  • Applications must be received in English.
Application Process
  • A description of the proposed project, including distribution plan, in no more than 250 words
  • A preliminary budget estimate, including a basic breakdown of costs. Their typical grants cover hard costs associated with the reporting. Fixer/translator/driver fees are acceptable and stipends can be considered depending on the circumstances.
  • Three samples of published work
  • Three professional references. These can be either contact information, or letters of recommendation. The latter is encouraged when letters from interested producers or editors are available.
  • A copy of your curriculum vitae
  • Applications may also include a more detailed description of the project but this will be considered as optional supplement only. The most important part of the submission is the 250-word summary.

GBIF and the open-access Journal of Limnology have announced a call for researchers to submit data papers about species that inhabit the world’s inland waters.

While freshwater environments cover less than one per cent of Earth’s surface and contain less than three per cent of all water on the planet, they are home to at least 10 per cent of all species. Many freshwater macro- and microorganisms also serve as sentinels for the health of these ecosystems, which provide essential life-giving benefits to all species, even terrestrial ones like their own. Despite the severe threats freshwater biodiversity faces, understanding of and investments in its protection typically pales in comparison to those directed toward the terrestrial and marine realms.

To assist efforts to fill gaps in primary biodiversity data on freshwater species, GBIF will sponsor will the article processing charges—normally €624—for the first sixteen (16) manuscripts accepted by the Journal of Limnology to describe datasets:

  • with clear research relevance for species inhabiting or dependent on freshwater habitats
  • with more than 5,000 presence records new to GBIF.org
  • with high-quality data and metadata
  • dedicated to the public domain under an open CC0 designation
Criteria
  • The selected publications will appear in a special issue of the Journal of Limnology in late 2022 or early 2023.
  • Non-native speakers of English should ensure that their manuscripts are checked either by native speakers or by professional English-language editors prior to submission.

The Climate, Food and Farming, Global Research Alliance Development Scholarships (CLIFF-GRADS) Programme invites applications from PhD students from developing countries for short term scientific training and research on the measurement, modelling and mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions, or carbon storage in agricultural systems relevant to developing countries.

CLIFF-GRADS builds capability in early career scientists from developing countries to conduct applied research in agriculture greenhouse gas emission quantification and mitigation. During short research stays of up to 6 months, CLIFF-GRADS awardees are exposed to expertise and scientific training at their host institute that they would not otherwise receive during their PhD in their home country.

Specific techniques they may learn include (but are not limited to) remote sensing, data surveys, and measurement of greenhouse gas emissions. Topics advertised in the Programme are related to the measurement, modelling and mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions, or carbon storage in agricultural systems relevant to developing countries (also in the context of enhancing food security).

Research is conducted in association with CCAFS and GRA scientists and partner organisations and host to student matches are dependent on the students’ and host institutions’ research interests and suitability for the Programme.

Funding Information
  • Grants of $12,000 USD will be awarded to PhD students from developing countries for research stays that will be completed before the end of 2024.
  • Duration: CLIFF-GRADS research stays are expected to be a maximum of 6 months. Students and research supervisors are welcome to extend the stay by mutual agreement if additional funding is available to support a longer stay.

Individuals applying for the Programme must be citizens of developing countries , be undertaking their PhD in a University in a developing country and must not have previously been awarded a CLIFF-GRADS grant.

Context/Background

NRC in Cameroun

The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) started operating in the Far North region in 2017 and in the North West and South West regions since August 2018 to provide life-saving assistance to vulnerable populations. In May 2019, NRC started operating in the East region with an ICLA project. In the Far North and the North West and South West Regions, NRC is implementing the following core competencies(cc):

  • Information, Counselling and Legal Assistance (ICLA),
  • WASH,

  • Livelihoods and Food security (LFS),
  • Education
  1. Role and responsibilities

The purpose of the Shelter Programme Development Manager(PDM) is to be responsible for the design, development, and implementation of a Shelter programme in a start-up operation. While not considered a start-up, NRC Cameroon has not moved to a structure with CC Specialists. Part of the role of the PDM is to advise on when/if such a switch is possible, and under which circumstances.

The Shelter PDM has national coverage and is responsible for the programme direction, implementation, and quality across the three crises NRC Cameroon is responding to: Far North region, Northwest and Southwest regions, and the East.

The following is a brief description of the role.

Specific responsibilities

  • Develop and plan procedures and tools for implementation of Shelter projects in line with proposals, strategies, and donor requirements
  • Identify trends in conditions/standards and donor priorities and assess better ways to assist
  • Monitor the Shelter projects and ensure high technical quality and synergies
  • Monitor technical quality of Shelter projects and maintain transparency of implementation progress
  • Scale up and diversify Shelter operational capacity (recruitment & capacity development)
  • Promote the rights of people affected by displacement and explore, assess, and promote new and better ways to provide assistance
  • Support and integrate Safe Programming and advocacy priorities into Shelter programme design
  • Contribute to promoting integrated programming with other Core Competencies (cc) through systematic planning/cooperation with other CC PDMs
  • Contribute programme suggestions to promote durable solutions
  • Be actively involved with the Shelter working groups / Cluster (national and area level)

As the Programme Manager for the Financial Sustainability Programme (FSP) you will deliver value to Plan International through the development of a range of projects to increase the effectiveness of organisational capability to deliver value at both global and local levels. You will work closely with stakeholders across business, leadership and governance at Plan International to facilitate solutions to complex and strategic problems using a mix of technical expertise, creativity, perseverance and intellectual rigour. 

 

This role will work closely with the FSP Lead to manage delivery of the Financial Sustainability Programme (FSP) deliverables by ensuring the work is planned and sequenced, that implementation is monitored and managed, and that there is effective communication, reporting and governance. 

 

The Person 

 

With prior experience managing/leading a project or programme management of complex initiatives. You will require experience of engaging with stakeholders at senior managerial levels as well as of supervising and guiding others. You will need to be resilient and comfortable with ambiguity.  

   

Organizational and coordination skills in addition to process improvement and analysis albitites are essential to this role. You will have robust project or programme management skills, including risk and issue identification and mitigation. A confident communicator and interpersonal skills who can manage and effect change efficiently.

Submissions are now open for the 2023 LUSH Spring Prize to build capacity for those repairing the earth’s damaged systems and leaving the world lusher than they found it.

The LUSH Spring prize is for organisations that are working to revive damaged social and natural environments, and who want to share what they are doing to inspire and inform others.

People all over the world are developing ways to live in harmony with nature and each other. They are generating renewable resources, restoring ecosystems, nurturing solidarity and building health, wholeness and resilience. They are bringing life back to damaged land and oceans, and reversing silent springs.

The Lush Spring Prize is here to support these regeneration movements through:

  • A biennial £200,000 prize fund. This is open to communities, organisations and businesses from the Intentional stage, through to Young and Established organisations, and Influencers.
  • Events that bring people together to share their skills and experience.
  • Publicity to raise awareness of regeneration and its potential to heal damaged systems,create resilience to crises, and grow abundance.
Prize categories

There are four different Spring Prize categories: Intentional, Young, Established and Influence.

  • Intentional Award: This prize is for individuals, communities, aspiring businesses or newly formed groups and organisations to help establish a strong foundation from which to grow.
  • Young Award: For groups or organisations who are 1-5 years old and are looking for a boost to expand or develop their work. There are at least 3 Young Projects awards.
  • Established Award: For groups or organisations who are seen as beacons – ones that demonstrate success and are standing the test of time. There are at least 2 Established Projects awards.
  • Influence Award: This prize is for local, national or international organisations and networks that have a core focus on campaigning or lobbying to influence policy, regulation or public opinion in support of regeneration. There are at least 2 Influence awards.
Award Information

For 2023, the prize categories again cover the ideas stage, through to young and established organisations, and campaigns to influence policy or public opinion towards a more regenerative society.

  • Intentional Award – at least 4 awards of up to £10,000
  • Young Award – at least 3 awards of up to £20,000
  • Established Award – at least 2 awards of up to £25,000
  • Influence Award – at least 2 awards of up to £25,000
  • Two additional collaborative prizes – with prize funds of £10,000 and £15,000

 

Eligibility Criteria
  • They accept applications from anywhere in the world.
  • You can also nominate an organisation or project and they will contact them – encouraging them to apply.
  • Lush, the company funding the Spring Prize, is a vegetarian company. As such, money awarded will not be channelled towards the direct slaughter or ill-treatment of animals.
  • They will not fund organisations or projects involved in animal testing.
  • They will not fund organisations or projects involved in destructive environmental and social practices.
  • Although organisations farming animals will not be excluded, priority will be given to organisations which encourage alternatives to animal consumption.
  • Any project which does not quite fit these eligibility guidelines is welcome to apply if they feel they can provide a strong argument for why they should consider them.
  • Organisations may only submit an application to one category.
  • No organisation will receive a prize two years in a row.
  • Prizes are for ongoing work (not as a reward for past work).
  • If offered a prize, recipients must:
    • Attend the awards ceremony, unless there are exceptional circumstances (all expenses will be paid).
    • Prepare information on the winning project for the awards event.
    • Fill in an evaluation form 10 months from the award being given.
    • Support the PR and outreach activity for the prize.
    • Ethical Consumer Research Association (a partner in the LUSH Spring Prize) will conduct due diligence research on nominated individuals and organisations prior to recommending initiatives for awards. It would be helpful if applicants flag up any potential concerns in advance.
    • Other unanticipated ethical concerns will be considered on a case by case basis.
