Grant Opportunities: 2023 Martin Ennals Award for Human Rights Defenders

Deadline: 31-Jul-22

Nominations are now open for the 2023 Martin Ennals Award for Human Rights Defenders to honor individuals and organizations who have shown exceptional commitment to defending human rights, despite the risks involved.

The Martin Ennals Award (MEA) is an international Award given to human rights defenders in urgent need of protection. Many defenders who are nominated for the Award face serious risks – for example, they are in jail or at risk of detention; they have been prevented from carrying out their work by authorities or businesses, or they have disappeared. The Award seeks to protect these defenders by highlighting their work through the media and mobilizing international support for them. The presentation of the Award is accompanied by significant advocacy and outreach activities in favor of the human rights defenders concerned. The winners are also given a financial prize to use at their discretion.

The promotion and defense of human rights by activists plays a decisive role in many countries where they promote the search for justice, peace, and equity for all. The Martin Ennals Award aims to support the tireless struggles of these men and women.

The independent Martin Ennals Award Jury will select three winners – or Laureates – who will be announced publicly in early 2023.

Eligibility Criteria
  • To qualify for the Award, the nominees must:
    • Be currently active in the promotion and protection of human rights
    • Not employ or advocate violence
    • Not be self-nominated
    • Be in need of protection
  • Self-nominations for the MEA are not accepted. Human rights defenders or organizations can be nominated by a third party, as long as the motivation is substantiated and the candidate meets the MEA criteria, namely being a human rights defender at risk.
  • Past Laureates include lawyers, journalists, civil society activists and even a Buddhist monk.
  • Post-humous nominations are not eligible.
Criteria

In addition to the achievements of the candidate, several criteria are taken into consideration for the Award:

  • Candidates must be currently active in the promotion and protection of human rights. The Award does not consider defenders who are deceased.
  • The candidate should not employ or advocate violence.
  • Self -nominations are not accepted.
  • Defenders who are no longer in need of protection (e.g. because they are now in a safe environment) will normally not be considered.

Grant Opportunities: IPA: Human Trafficking Research Initiative

Deadline: 5-Aug-22

The Innovations for Poverty Action’s (IPA) Human Trafficking Research Initiative (HTRI) has launched its second Call for Expressions of Interest (EOI) for full randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and other rigorous impact evaluations to assess the impact of counter-trafficking programs.

HTRI welcomes proposals to assess counter-trafficking interventions that fall into any or all of the “4P’s” (prevention, protection, prosecution, and partnership). Funding priorities are guided by HTRI’s Research and Learning Agenda, which outlines key research gaps under the 4P’s.

Details

Applicants are instructed to read the Research and Learning Agenda and refer to one or more of HTRI’s priority research questions that their research project intends to address. Research that is primarily qualitative or descriptive will NOT be considered for funding under HTRI. Applicants can request full funding for RCTs, partial funding for RCTs, or funding for new arms of existing RCTs, as described below:

  • Full rigorous studies to assess the impact of a counter-trafficking programThese grants are for research projects with a clear research question, committed implementing partner(s), well-defined research designs, and statistical power estimates. While most of the impact evaluations funded will be RCTs, studies that use high-quality quasi-experimental and/or natural experiments will be considered in exceptional cases when a randomized experiment is not possible. Grants can also fund the continuation or completion of RCTs that have already started without HTRI funding (including those for which data collection is complete). This includes midline and endline surveys, long-run follow-up surveys from previously published evaluations, as well as “downstream studies” that use an already-completed randomized trial to answer a human trafficking-relevant question. The expectation is that this work will result in a paper publishable in a top economic, political science, or science journal.
  • Adding a human trafficking-targeted treatment arm to an existing study: These are grants that will support expanding a study by adding a treatment arm explicitly focused on reducing human trafficking to an existing randomized evaluation.
  • Adding human trafficking-focused survey modules or survey rounds to existing studiesThese are smaller grants that would fund the cost of adding human trafficking survey modules to upcoming data collection rounds for existing studies or add a new survey round to an existing study.
Award Information
  • Full rigorous studies to assess the impact of a counter-trafficking program: Awards are between $50,000 and $450,000. Applicants should apply for the funds needed to yield the best research, but (all other things equal) lower budgets have a higher probability of being funded.
  • Adding a human trafficking-targeted treatment arm to an existing study: Applicants can request funding for the costs of expanding the study sample and survey as well as the human trafficking-focused intervention. Awards are between $100,000 and $250,000.
  • Adding human trafficking-focused survey modules or survey rounds to existing studies:  They are intended for research studies that are likely to have an impact on trafficking but are not currently collecting human trafficking data. Awards are between $50,000 and $125,000.

Duration: Project timelines will depend on individual proposals. However, they expect research projects to launch in early 2023 and to close before the end of Spring 2025.

Geographical Focus

All projects must benefit people and communities in/from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).

Eligibility Criteria
  • Researchers must either hold a PhD or be currently pursuing a PhD in a relevant social science discipline. The research team must include members with demonstrated experience in field research and randomized evaluations and members with a deep understanding of human trafficking in the target region/country, including the social determinants that allow human trafficking to thrive.
  • IPA encourages proposals from diverse research teams. They welcome applications from researchers from multiple disciplines and historically underrepresented groups, and they strongly encourage research teams to include researchers from the countries where the project will take place, with clearly defined contributions from all members of the research team. Researchers with lived experience of human trafficking are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • HTRI also encourages the contribution and input into research projects of people with lived experience of human trafficking, from the design stage through implementation and dissemination of results, at all levels of project leadership.

Deadline: 29-Jul-22

The Collaboration on International ICT Policy for East and Southern Africa (CIPESA) is pleased to announce the ninth edition of the Forum on Internet Freedom in Africa 2022 (FIFAfrica22).

The Forum is set to take place in Lusaka, Zambia on September 26-29, 2022, offers a platform for deliberation on gaps and opportunities for advancing privacy, free expression, inclusion, free flow of information, civic participation, and innovation online. As part of the registration, they invite session proposals including panel discussions, lightning talks, exhibitions, and skills workshops to shape the agenda for FIFAfrica22.

CIPESA recognises that internet freedom is multi-faceted, and just like it is essential to have a multiplicity of stakeholders working jointly, it also requires diversity in the voices, backgrounds, viewpoints, and thematic work areas of those that attend FIFAfrica.

Over the course of four days, the FIFAfrica22 agenda will feature panels, workshops, exhibitions, and presentations. All interactions will maintain and observe national COVID-19 Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Add

Criteria

  • The Forum is a landmark event that convenes various stakeholders from the internet governance and online rights arenas in Africa and beyond to deliberate on gaps, concerns and opportunities for advancing privacy, access to information, free expression, non-discrimination and the free flow of information online on the continent.
  • In line with this, there is limited funding to support travel for participation at FIFAfrica22. Preference will be given to applicants who can partially support their attendance.

Grant Opportunities: Getty Images Creative Grant: Disability Communities

Deadline: 1-Jul-22

Applications are now open for the Getty Images Creative Grant to provide financial support and mentorship to artists who are committed to authentically representing members within the disability community.

With Getty Images’ mission to move the world, they are partnering with Verizon and the National Disability Leadership Alliance (NDLA) to promote diversity within creative commercial photography and videography, elevating the work and voices of people within disability communities.

This Grant aims to portray a diverse range of people, groups and experiences within the disability community in a variety of settings, with the overarching goal of helping brands, agencies and content creators more authentically represent those within the community.

This Grant comes on the heels of The Disability Collection, a joint effort launched in 2018 by Getty Images and Verizon, in conjunction with the National Disability Leadership Alliance (NDLA) to more authentically represent people with disabilities in the media. The collection has grown to include over 4,000 curated images and videos devoted to portraying individuals with disabilities more accurately.
