Country Program Coordinator

Malteser International (MI) is the international humanitarian relief agency of the Sovereign Order of Malta. Malteser International has been working in Nigeria since 2017. Areas of intervention are in Northeast Nigeria (Borno and Adamawa State), Southeast Nigeria (Cross River State) as well as in the anglophone region of Cameroon. Program activities are in humanitarian work yet aim to expand into transitional aid and development, particularly in Adamawa State. Activities include the provision of water supply and water quality management, hygiene promotion, sanitation construction and services in the WASH sector, as well as Gender-based Violence (GBV) prevention and case management in the protection sector. Malteser International applies a participatory, gender-sensitive and inclusive approach in all its projects and works with IDP/refugee populations and host communities.

For its work in Nigeria, Malteser International is looking for a motivated Country Program Coordinator with multiple years of experience in humanitarian and development programming and MEAL.

In the position of Country Program Coordinator, you will be part of a motivated team working in the sectors of WASH and protection. You will be in charge of program quality and development as well as MEAL.

Your responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership and strategic direction for the design of the MI program strategies and plans, including the development of resource mobilization strategies in support to the Country Coordinator, program and external actors related intelligence gathering and positioning to attract funding for new projects
  • Lead high quality project and activity design, including the planning phase and set up of monitoring, evaluation, accountability and learning (MEAL) systems jointly with the technical support team
  • Ensure effective MEAL systems including accountability and learning mechanisms are in place, with regular dissemination of strategic information to senior management team and other relevant staff to drive learning and improve program quality
  • Oversight of country program plans as per grant agreements, arranging proposal narrative and logical frameworks and ensuring adherence to international (SPHERE, IASC, CHS) and national standards in coordination with the sectoral teams
  • Lead on partnership engagements and manage and develop existing partnerships and anticipated partnerships, including the identification of new partners, agreement management and oversight, capacity building and strategies on improving partnerships

Your profile:

  • International work experience of at least five years; progressive senior management and/or development experience in a corporate or an NGO environment
  • Strong skills in new program development, project design, and donor proposal design in the areas of humanitarian relief, transitional aid and/or development aid
  • Working experience in Nigeria and sectoral knowledge in WASH or Protection would be an asset
  • Proven experience in leading strategic planning, change management and program management processes; including from the knowledge and learning perspective
  • Familiarity with development and management of monitoring, evaluation and learning (MEAL) systems
  • Experience in the management of staff and large multidisciplinary teams
  • Team Player, stress resistant, culturally sensitive

What we offer:

  • Start Date: 03/2023
  • Duty Station: Maiduguri, Nigeria (with frequent travel to field locations and Abuja)
  • Duration of contract: 12 months (extension very likely)
  • Salary according to qualification and experience, insurance package, accommodation in team house, one home flight per year of employment, R&R every 10 weeks
  • Please note this is an unaccompanied position
